Grant Gives Students a Head Start for Their Future

Many high schools are beginning to focus education on technical careers like auto mechanics and welding. A grant is now allowing these students to take college technical courses for free.

“Today’s economy is the perfect example of why a four degree does not equal a successful job,” says Wallace Community College dual enrollment coordinator, Lynn Lamere.

Many of today’s students are realizing that.

“I’ve always wanted to go to college. I don’t know about a four year college. That’s not my kind of stuff, but I like technical colleges,” says Dothan City Schools student, Josh Jenkins.

Now Dothan City Schools and Wallace Community College are partnering to offer duel enrollment for free with the help of an Alabama workforce development grant.

“The state of Alabama has recognized there are certain career fields that there is a shortage of. They recognized with funding we can actually pay the tuition, fees and books,” says Lamere.

By duel enrolling in these high paying and high demand careers students are being better prepared for the future.

“They can get a head start on their career as far as certification or achieving a degree in some of these highly skilled high demand jobs such as auto technology,” adds Lamere.

It doesn’t stop there. Students were able to take a closer look at the welding, carpentry, criminal justice, medical assisting, and child development programs at Wallace Community College. Many students felt the tour was helpful.

“Just getting the basic stuff done at Wallace will help me focus on what I really want to major in once I get in college. I don’t have to pay tuition so I think it’s really good,” says another student, Kevin Cruz.

If your child is interested in dual enrolling, they can contact either their high school guidance counselor or the duel enrollment office at Wallace at 334-566-2627.
