GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) -- Police and the mayor of a north Alabama city say they're considering adding retired officers to city schools to bolster security in the wake of the Connecticut elementary school shooting.

The Gadsden Times reports Gadsden Police Chief John Crane and Mayor Sherman Guyton are working together to find retired officers and other law enforcement officials to work in the city's schools.

The newspaper reports schools guards would need to have valid firearms-related certifications to allow them to carry weapons on school property.

Schools superintendent Ed Miller told the newspaper the goal is to place a security guard in every school in the city.
