Florida Slots Ruling

A battle over slot machines at the Ebro Greyhound Racetrack and Gretna Casino isn't letting up.

Earlier this year, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi said the state can't issue licenses even with voter approval from Washington and Gadsden counties.

So far, neither facility has requested a slot machine license.

Bondi says slots should only be allowed in Miami-Dade and Broward counties because of a state law.

Officials for Gretna racing and Ebro Greyhound Park say adding slot machines would bring more jobs to the two counties.

But those opposed say allowing them on the track will create nothing but trouble.

They cite everything from moral decay to broken homes and bank accounts.

More than six thousand people voted for the machines back in January.

But the referendum passed in Washington County by a narrow margin.

57 percent of votes favored the machines, while 43 percent were against the measure.

The track's owner, Mark Hess, is believed to be consulting with lawyers and a statement could be released soon.
