(Tallahassee, FL)—Florida A & M President James Ammons announced his resignation on Wednesday. His exit comes as the same day the parents of Robert Champion, who died after being hazed, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the university.

Robert Champion died in November 2011 after being beaten by fellow band members during a hazing related death after a school football game.

Eleven FAMU band members face felony hazing charges, while two others face misdemeanor counts for alleged roles in the hazing. They have pleaded not guilty.

The lawsuit claims university officials did not take action to stop hazing, even though a school dean proposed suspending the band because of hazing concerns three days before their son died.

The FAMU board members will meet on Monday to discuss Ammons’ resignation and figure out what transition is next for the University.
