FLOMATON, Ala. (AP) -- A south Alabama sheriff is in stable condition after being shot during a standoff in Flomaton.
Trooper Kevin Cook said in an email that Escambia Sheriff Grover Smith was wounded Friday morning while conducting "official business" at the residence of 62-year-old James Arrington of Flomaton.
After Smith was shot, Arrington took his own life. Smith is being held at the Mobile Hospital.
An official with the sheriff's office says Smith was hit in the right forearm and should be fine, but he might require surgery.
