TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Military veterans could get a tuition break under a bill passed unanimously by the Florida House.

The "Florida GI" bill would allow honorably discharged veterans to pay in-state tuition rates if they attend a state university or college. It heads next to the Florida Senate.

The bill passed by the House Tuesday also includes money for tuition scholarships for National Guard members, as well as money to repair armories and acquire land adjacent to existing U.S. military installations.

Legislators touted the bill (HB 7015) as a way to show that Florida cares about its military veterans, especially before the next round of base closings are considered by the federal government.

Florida has roughly 1.5 million veterans, and there is an estimated 61,000 active military personnel stationed in the state.
