MONTGOMERY- Alabama Emergency Management Director Art Faulkner announced Friday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has granted Governor Robert Bentley’s request to extend the registration deadline for Federal Disaster Assistance. Alabama residents impacted by the flooding and tornadoes of late April will have more time to apply for disaster assistance. FEMA granted Alabama’s request for a 14 day extension for Individual Assistance.

The new registration deadline is July 15, 2014.

“Governor Bentley is very pleased that FEMA has granted his extension request. It provides an additional opportunity for our citizens to register for federal assistance,” said Alabama EMA Director Art Faulkner. “It is vital that all citizens in the affected areas complete the necessary paperwork to be eligible for assistance.”

The deadline to submit loan applications to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has also been extended to July 15, 2014. While no one is required to take out an SBA loan, applications are a key part of the FEMA registration process, thus it is a must that they are returned. A loan denial may open up other assistance to eligible applicants.

If the loan is not approved, survivors may be referred to other programs for grants that can assist the homeowner or renter in replacing essential household items; it also can replace or repair damaged vehicles or cover other serious disaster related needs.

This extension will apply to all nine counties declared for Individual Assistance.

Disaster survivors in the counties designated for Individual Assistance may apply online anytime at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, or call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362 (FEMA) or (TTY) 800-462-7585 for those with speech and hearing disabilities.

For SBA applications renters or homeowners may call SBA at 800-659-2955 or they can download the application from sba.gov.
