FBI Releases Audio and Photos from the Midland City Hostage Situation

Nearly four months after a hostage standoff in Dale County, we’re finally getting an idea of how everything unfolded.

It was a Friday afternoon at the end of January most kids in Midland City were dreaming about the weekend. But Jimmy Lee Dykes,65, turned that afternoon into a nightmare.

He stormed a school bus demanding hostages. A student bravely calls 9-1-1.

(Dispatcher) Tell me what the guy with the gun is doing again?
(Teenage Caller) He’s asking for kids.
(Dispatcher) He’s asking for kids?!?!
(Teenage Caller) Yes ma’am.
(Dispatcher) has he made it onto the bus?
(Teenage Caller) Yes ma’am

The driver, Charles Poland, steps in, trying to protect the kids, but that heroic move cost him his life.

(Dispatcher) Is he on the bus? Did he take the kid off the bus?
(Teenage Caller) He took the kid off the bus.
(Dispatcher) Is the bus driver the only person that was shot?
(Teenage Caller) Yes ma’am.
(Dispatcher) Hang in there honey. You are doing so good. I’m so proud of you.

Dykes takes 5-year-old Ethan underground into a bunker on his property. The F-B-I just released these photos of the inside. It was the size of a parking space, buried 12 feet underground. Bunk beds with thin mattresses fill most of the space.

Meanwhile, a command center is staged in a nearby church. You can see an army of law enforcement officers working around the clock.

In audio recordings, you can hear an agitated Dykes cursing out hostage negotiators.

“You just go ahead and send some mother (expletive) down that God (expletive) funnel up there to their death.”

Six days into the hostage situation, the FBI stormed in and shot Dykes.

Ethan is recovered just in time for his 6th birthday. He and his family now try to move forwards and leave these images behind.

To give to Ethan's conservatorship, you may still do so by mailing donations to the following address:
