This story was updated at 4:11 p.m. on Friday, June 11.

Eufaula Mayor Jack B. Tibbs Jr. reported today he has received verbal notification that Cooper Industries will cease operation of its Eufaula plant effective October.

Tibbs stated he contacted Cooper plant manager Richard Hartzog Thursday and Hartzog confirmed the company has made the decision to close the plant based on economic reasons and the plant will re-locate out-of-country.

Cooper employs approximately 280 employees, Tibbs said and is the main customer of Elm Manufacturing and R&R engineering, also located in Eufaula. Those companies employ approximately 30 people.

Tibbs stated the city has been in contact with Rep. Martha Roby’s office, our local legislative delegation, our economic development team and the Department of Commerce, as well as the Governor’s office to assist with any effort in retaining this industry in our community.
