If you're a strong multi-tasker, can stay calm in stressful situations, and can keep confidential information safe,
Geneva County E911 may have the perfect job for you.
They're the first, "first responders." Before EMS gets to the scene of an accident, an emergency medical dispatcher is on the phone to help.
Geneva County E911 director Jeremy Williams says EMD's play a crucial role in emergency response. "They answer 911 calls, they dispatch for the dispatch for fire, EMS, police, Sheriff's department in Geneva County," Williams says.
They hear the screams and panicked cries as people call in to report emergencies. They also help callers stay calm, collecting key information like phone numbers and locations.
"We have people that call 911 that's in the heat of the moment for an emergency that sometimes are excited and we have to get all the information we can out of them," explains Williams.
Confidentiality is a must.
Williams says, "we have to have somebody that's trustworthy and that we can trust with people's information such as drivers license information, criminal history, tag information."
But remaining calm and staying mum are not the only requirements for the job. One of the most important parts of working as an emergency medical dispatcher is the ability to multitask between the radio, computer, 911 calls and the land line phone.
"They've got to be able to talk on the phone, talk on the radio, enter information into a computer system, all at the same time- and do it correctly," insists Williams.
Another key for EMD's is describing critical landmarks to other agencies. Williams says, "it also helps if you have someone that knows about the county. The geographical areas of the county, the different communities, landmarks, you know, also, for the towns and the cities."
Though the shift lasts 12 hours, a major perk of working as a dispatcher is lots of time off. The position with Geneva County E911 is only 14 days per month.
Williams says they're accepting applications until Friday, August 16th.
