They put others before themselves and don't even get a paycheck.
But Tuesday a group of local volunteers get rewarded for their sacrifice.

Houston County Emergency Management officials gave certificates of appreciation to 16 volunteers.

They helped during two major events in the Wiregrass.

For the Midland City hostage crisis, they operated equipment.

The volunteers also filled more than 5,000 sandbags during the recent flooding.

"If we didn't have these volunteers there's a lot of things we couldn't do. Simply because there's only three of us and when you're going around the clock these volunteers play a major role in what we get accomplished year in and year out," said Houston Co. EMA Director Clark Matthews.

Officials say this is just a small portion of the many volunteers who help year-round.
