Dothan City Schools bus driver Jerry Edding says he's looking forward to a safe route this school year.

"Last year i ran a route on Westgate Parkway there was over 200 cars that ran my stop arm during the school year and we only have 180 days of school," says Edding.

Edding hopes this year drivers will be more cautious and obey his stop arm.

"For the safety of the children we want them to start stopping when ever the yellow warning lights come on so that way when the stop arm comes out they can come to a stop."

"It doesn't matter if it's 4 lanes or five lanes everyone must come to a stop when the school bus has the red stop sign out," said DCS Transportation Director Jay Bruner.

That means if you're behind the bus in the left or right lane or across the street in the left or right lane you must stop, the only exception is if there's a median.

"It's so important for people to realize that we're hauling their children and we want safety first," said Edding.

Officers say you should also pay close attention to school zone speed limits.

"We're real strict in our school zone for the speed limit because the children are there and we just don't t to take any chances," said Sgt. Ronnie Anderson, DPD SRO Supervisor.

Officers say if you are caught speeding in a school zone or passing a school bus when the stop arm is out, 99 percent of the time you will get a ticket.

Drivers are also warned to be cautious at railroad crossings, school buses are required to stop first before crossing the tracks.
