At approximately 3:51 am the City of Dothan Communications Center
received a 911 call regarding a structure fire on Liberty Court in the
Young America Subdivision.
Initial reports indicated that flames were visible from the involved structure and possibly still occupied by an adult female.
The first arriving fire unit reported heavy smoke and fire coming
from the windows on the front of the home. As firefighters entered the
home to complete search and rescue operations they encountered heavy fire conditions in the hallway leading to the sleeping areas.
The fire was knocked down and an adult female victim was located in a bedroom.
The patient was removed from the home and transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire.
The victim (name being withheld until family is notified) is a 41 year old female.
Two teenage children were also home at the time of the fire and were able to self-evacuate with only minor injuries.
Investigators with the Dothan Fire Marshal’s Office along with the Dothan Police Department Criminal Investigation Division are on scene to determine the cause of the fire.
Dothan Fire Chief, Larry Williams, said “This is a tragedy for this family, the neighborhood and our City”. Williams continued, “The men and women of the Dothan Fire Department will continue to take every
opportunity to educate our citizens about the importance of having
working smoke detectors as well as a home evacuation plan”.
Initial investigation reveals there was not a smoke detector in the home.
Fire Chief Williams concluded, “The family and friends of the victim will
continue to be in the thoughts and prayers of all of us at the Dothan Fire Department”.
As more details become available they will be released.
