DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) -- A street corner in downtown Dothan is losing eight parking spaces in order to gain a new public park.

Reports say workers have begun removing asphalt from a parking lot near the city's federal courthouse to make room for Pioneer Park.

City Planning Director Todd McDonald says the park will be a small green space with a gazebo-like shaded area, a plaque paying tribute to key figures behind the city's downtown revitalization and a clock tower. Some building materials recycled from the old Dothan City Jail are expected to be used.

Workers have also been replacing aging water lines in the area in advance of a landscaping project. McDonald says he hopes to take bids for Pioneer Park's construction next month.
