A good portion of Dothan’s 200-million dollar budget is from sales taxes.
It's no surprise that that revenue is vital to the city's operations.
This year the city of Dothan has racked in more than 52-million dollars in sales tax collections.
That number is good from a yearly standpoint, but it’s the monthly percentages officials are worried about.
“Were a little concerned because it’s been two months in a row we've been down a little bit its substantially better than two years ago or three years ago when we were down greatly.” Dothan Mayor Mike Schmitz said.
August lodging tax collections were up from July this fiscal year, but down from the same time period last year.
But mayor Schmitz says he’s not too concerned about those numbers.
We have a regional high school tournament coming up which we think will have a major impact economically. We do have some tennis tournaments and some softball tournaments so it goes up and down but it’s still pretty solid at where it’s at." Schmitz said.
A breakdown of how sales tax in Dothan is dispersed.
There is a 9-cent tax on every dollar spent in Dothan.
4-cents goes to the state, 1-cent to Houston County, and the other 4-cents to the city of Dothan.
“We have a 2hundred million dollar budget. It’s mostly sales tax revenue that’s our highest income and it goes directly into our general budget which goes towards the running of the city.” Schmitz said.
Mayor Schmitz says overall it’s been a good year and he has a positive outlook for months to come.
So far this fiscal year, the total lodging tax collected in Dothan is nearly 1 and a half million dollars .
