The city of Dothan has been exploring it's options concerning the landfill on Burkett Road for nearly a year. Now it appears the wait is almost over.
City officials hope to make a decision in the next sixty days about whether to expand the current landfill or build a transfer station.
Dothan Mayor Mike Schmitz says the city has taken it's time making a decision due to the concerns of some local residents.
The city has commissioned testing on the effects of expansion including the impact on water in the area.
If the city chooses expansion it would add fifteen acres to the current landfill.
Building a transfer station would mean transporting solid waste to a location then taking it to landfills in other areas.
Mayor Schmitz says expansion is the cities cheapest option.
