Headland, AL - Santa Claus, a ballerina, and a lion all strutted their stuff in downtown Headland Saturday morning.

“I'm supporting C.H.A.R.M, and Harley was in the pet pageant,” said one dog owner.

Harley along with dozens of other dogs and their owners took over the square in support of the City of Headland Animal Rescue Mission, better known as C.H.A.R.M.

“We do not have a facility. We're not a brick and mortar building. We provide all the food, medical care, and shelter improvements for the Headland animal shelter,” said C.H.A.R.M member Jo Geisler.

Last year, 93 dogs came through the no kill shelter. They were able to find forever homes for 72 percent of them. The others were reunited with their owners.

Saturday, the 6th annual Pawsfest was held. Music, vendors, a pageant, and parade all helped raise awareness for animal adoption, as well as spay and neuter programs for pets.

“If you could just come out and have your dog with you and support the charity, it's just a great event,” said dog owner Donn Haviland.

While the turnout may not be as big as organizers hoped because of the wind and potential for rain, some say it was worth the risk coming out and spending the day on the square.

“If it was a beautiful sunny day, it would certainly be a better day for everybody, but we are delighted these people have come out and shown their support for us in spite of the dire weather predictions,” said Geisler.

Because it takes more than a little wind and rain to keep these furry friends off the catwalk.
