Defendants Seek Delay in Alabama Gambling Trial

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Several defendants in the Alabama gambling probe are asking a judge to delay their trial, which is scheduled for April 4.

The defendants say they need more time to go through 2,800 telephone calls and more than 200,000 pages of documents turned over by the prosecution.

U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson has given prosecutors until Dec. 9 to say whether they oppose a delay.

The requests for the delay caused a status conference to be canceled in the gambling case Thursday.

A district judge decided there was no need to have a conference until after Thompson rules on whether to delay the trial.

Eleven people, including two casino developers, were arrested in October on charges accusing them of buying or selling votes on pro-gambling legislation.

The "BIG" rush is due to a little thing known as a constitutional guarentee known as a RIGHT to a SPEEDY TRIAL. When you see a trial drag on for years, it is usually due to a defendant not wanting to face justice and getting his or HER lawyer to delay facing a jury of their peers. But, then this is only a little thing known as the LAW. Since when did we worry about the LAW in Alabama.

It will take more than delaying tactics to get this bunch of crooks off. And think how smart our Alabama voters were to re-elect them, thus making Alabama even more of a laughing stock of the rest of the country. Now you are contributing to their defense fund.
