Employers have until October 1st to let their employees know about their healthcare options.
But that insurance does not have to cover everyone in the employee's family.
"One of the things that people may not understand is that under the new law employers can cover employees and their dependents, their spouses under the new law are not considered the dependent so the spouses can be looking at finding insurance themselves," said Terry Horn, certified public accountant.
Dependents must also be insured.
"If a person does not insure a dependent which is their children and they do not insure those dependents then they can be charged a penalty," said Horn.
However, the minimum amount your employer has to offer may be surprising.
"Again the employer is only required to offer to the employee's minimum essential coverage if you will I like to call it a skinny insurance plan," said Horn.
A plan that some local businesses are still trying to figure out.
The federal health care law requested states set up exchanges or marketplaces to help residents with insurance.
Alabama and Florida chose not to participate.
Georgia's exchanges will open on October 1st.
