Dothan, Ala. – The Dothan Police Department Community Services Division announced their results of a crime analysis project that focused on the activity of the Community Watch Program.

The Community Services Division conducted a three-year analysis of crime reports received by the Dothan Police Department. The data included all types of crimes regardless of their severity and focused only on reported crimes and did not include non-criminal incidents.

The trend of crimes reported involving neighborhoods who did not participate in the Community Watch program saw an overall reduction in crime from 2011 to 2013. However, there was a one percent increase in crime from 2011 to 2012, which is in stark contrast to areas that did participate in the program.

Areas that established Community Watch groups and remained active during the same time frame experienced a steady reduction in crimes reported from 112 reports in 2011 to just 87 reported in 2013; a 22 percent reduction in crimes.

The Community Watch program is administered by the Dothan Police Department and provides systems and training to participants to help them make their neighborhoods safer. It also promotes better relationships among neighbors and better relationships between citizens and your police department. Through these activities, the Community Watch program helps make our neighborhoods safer and reduces crime.

For more information on establishing a Community Watch group in your area, contact Community Watch Program Coordinator, Cpl. David Schwab, at (334) 793-0230.

It is free to participate in the program and groups can be as large or as small as is needed.
