MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Voters in southwest Alabama's 1st Congressional District are getting ready for a special primary election that will whittle down the field of candidates.
In Tuesday's race, nine Republicans and two Democrats are seeking their parties' nominations to replace Jo Bonner of the GOP. Former two-year college chancellor Bradley Byrne leads the Republicans in fundraising.
National political figures are playing a role in the Republican race. Rick Santorum, who won Alabama's presidential preference primary last year, is supporting columnist Quin Hillyer, and former vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan is backing former Republican National Committee staffer Wells Griffith.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
