DOTHAN POST – A two-vehicle crash this morning, April 18, claimed the life of a Covington County Sheriff’s deputy.

The crash occurred at approximately 7:40 a.m. on Alabama 55 near the intersection of Alabama 55 and South Bypass.

Deputy Heath Kelly was transported from the scene by ambulance to Andalusia Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the other vehicle also was transported from the scene by ambulance to the hospital with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.

The deputy was on duty and responding to a crash with injuries and an overturned vehicle.

Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.

Covington County Sheriff Dennis Meeks said Kelly spent five years working at the county jail before joining the sheriff's office.

"He was one of those guys that whatever needed doing, that’s what he did. He never questioned anything. Whatever his job was he took care of it. He was a great family man. Loved his family, but he loved his job too. He was a big burly guy, but he had a big heart too," said Meeks.
