VICTORIA, Texas (AP) -- A man from Romania has been sentenced to eight years in prison for an online scam claiming someone in the U.S. military needed to sell items before deploying.
A federal judge in Texas on Monday also ordered 29-year-old Doru Gabriel Trifu to repay $562,000. Jurors in Victoria on Sept. 25 convicted Trifu of 33 counts of wire fraud.
Investigators confirmed at least 230 fraudulent transactions since 2011 with payments sent online by potential buyers but no items delivered. Authorities say the case involved transactions in Alabama, Mississippi and Texas.
Prosecutors say Trifu was living in Orangevale, Calif., at the time of the fraud. He faces possible deportation after finishing his prison term.
