District 3 commissioner Albert Kirkland says he wants to give Eastgate park a slight facelift.

Kirkland says with the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine opening in Dothan, he wants to make sure the east side of town offers enough to students.

Kirkland is in talks with the Dothan Recreation Board.

He says he'd like to add a soccer field, update the current tennis court and add a bike trail in the park.

"There's going to be so many people involved in the medical school and building up around the medical school I'm sure people are going to take advantage of it," said Kirkland.

Earlier this year city commissioners agreed to build a "passive park for people with dogs" at Eastgate park.

They will also build restrooms and a pavilion.

A date for construction has not yet been set.
