There were more than 2.4 million reasons to smile today at the Wiregrass Area United Way.
"We had our last campaign this morning at Toyota of Dothan, and we were $26,500 short of our goal,” Wiregrass Area United Way CEO Walter Hill said. “They were going to be close to that, and the company decided that whatever the difference was, they would get it to that point so we could reach our goal this morning."
By reaching their goal, they also receive a big bonus. That bonus is much needed after coming up just shy of the goal last year.
"We're excited to reach the goal because now we get the $400,000 that was a challenge pledge by the Wiregrass Foundation. They will be writing us one check for $400,000, and one hundred percent of that will go out to our organizations."
The Wiregrass Foundation has donated almost 1.5 million dollars to the United Way in the pas five years, and this year they are excited to give again.
"It's always tremendous when they reach their goal, and during these recessionary periods it has been very difficult,” John Edge of the Wiregrass Foundation said. “Last year they came up a little short after working very hard, so we're excited that they have done it this year."
The Wiregrass United Way works diligently to fund local charities throughout the Wiregrass, and by reaching their goal plus the added bonus from the Wiregrass Foundation, this year is looking bright.
It takes help from everyone to make the United Way’s dream a reality. Toyota of Dothan is one of the many corporations in the Dothan area to help the greater cause.
"We're a family here,” Paul Scarborough of Toyota of Dothan said. “We're not just me or you, it's us. That's the same way the United Way looks at it as a partnership. We're willing to give back to our community, just like they give to us."
