Birmingham Home Sales on the Rise

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Metro Birmingham home sales rose 13 percent in June, the third month in a row of double-digit year-over-year sales growth.

Area home sales totaled 1,117 last month, up from 987 in June 2011, the Birmingham Association of Realtors said today.

Prices also rose. Last month's average price was $202,686, up 5 percent from a year ago, while the median price rose 7 percent to $165,300.

Through the first half of 2012, home sales totaled 5,354, a 17 percent improvement from the mid-point of 2011.

Foreclosure sales continue to represent a healthy portion of overall sales, hurting prices.

In June, there were 295 foreclosure sales, or 26 percent of all sales. The average foreclosure sale price was $85,337, while the average non-foreclosure sale price was $244,800.
