DESTIN, Fla. (AP) -- The popular Florida Panhandle tourist city of Destin is better known for its beaches than for black bears, but the bears are getting all the attention lately.

People have seen bears near restaurants and stores and in neighborhoods.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Stan Kirkland says residents shouldn't try to trap the bears. Kirkland says it isn't uncommon for younger, male bears to roam this time of year. He says at least one of the animals likely came from nearby Point Washington State Forest.

Kirkland says that if residents come in contact with the wild animals, they should make loud noises to scare them away. He also encouraged people to secure their trash cans.
