Some parents say they were startled to learn that some classes at Bay Minette Intermediate School had as many as 31 students.
Elementary schools across the county that include the same grade
levels show student-teacher ratios of 18 to 1.
Intermediate schools across the county vary, with some including
grades four through six and others including only fifth and sixth.
Under the state's formula, elementary grades warrant one teaching
unit per 18 students, with the state allocating money for salaries.
Intermediate schools warrant few teachers.
Schools would have to mix intermediate grades into existing elementary schools or create new elementary schools in feeder patterns to address the issue that way.
