Ozark Attempted Burglary Results in Huge Prescription Drug Bust

Ozark, AL - It was business as usual at the Red Top pharmacy Tuesday, but without the fast action of Ozark police things could be entirely different.

Just after two Sunday morning, the pharmacy alarm went off.
Police say when they arrived, Jeff Wright, 33, and Michael Sumler, 24, both of Pensacola were caught stealing any prescription they could get their hands on.

“A bunch of the medication they were taking weren’t actually narcotics. It looked like they sort of didn’t know what they were getting. They were just taking shelf by shelf. And a lot of that was medication taken for different conditions. Obviously if you didn’t know what you were taking or they tried to pass it off as something else it could be life threatening,” said pharmacist and owner of Red Top Pharmacy, Allan Strickland.

Police are not releasing very much information about how the two suspects entered the pharmacy, but here is what we do know. They tried to exit through the ceiling and that’s when the two fell through the sheet rock and police were able to capture the two suspects.

More than 300 prescription pill bottles were found inside their vehicle, and police say it looks like they had intent to distribute.

“They’re what we call traveling burglars. They pick different jurisdictions and burglarize a pharmacy. Their main thing is they sell that to the outside world,” said Ozark Police Chief Tony Spivey.

Why the Red Top Pharmacy was targeted remains unknown.

Wright and Sumler are charged with burglary, theft of property, and criminal mischief.

Police are working with other agencies to determine what other burglaries they could possibly be connected with.

They were both booked into the Dale County Jail under a $365,000 bond.
