The Salvation Army is struggling to provide Christmas for deserving children across the Wiregrass.
Hundreds of angels still hang on the Salvation Army’s tree waiting to be adopted.
Captain Jani Chriss of the Salvation Army says, "At least 300 to 400 that have not even been picked."
With clothing sizes, toys, and bikes filling the wish lists many may be concerned about completing it, but Chriss says don't be discouraged.
She says, “They are all suggestions. There are toy suggestions on the lists, but they can buy what's on their heart for that child.”
Unfortunately, the need continues to grow each year.
“There were so many that came up and said we just lost our job, and they had the documentation to prove it. We know that jobs are scarce out there, and that many are looking for jobs,“ says Chriss.
The Salvation Army says that without your help they will have to dip into other funds to fill their collection room with Christmas gifts.
“Sometimes the kettle money has to be diverted for that. If we can avoid it then the kettle money is used for the food we have to purchase, but the Salvation Army will try to buy what we can to fill that need," says Chriss.
This program lies close to her heart.
“My mother, in fact, was a child. At 5 years old in the depression there was a knock on the door and there was a Salvation Army basket of food and a doll. So I know it has made a difference because 70 years ago my mother was one of the recipients.”
And Chriss says that you can make that difference too.
“It's nothing that you have to do, but the joy it brings to your heart to know that you made a difference in a child's life.”
The Salvation Army’s angel tree will be set up in the Wiregrass Commons Mall until this Saturday if you would like to adopt an angel.
