DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - A beagle from north Alabama is getting second chance as a bug-hunting dog.
George the beagle wound up at the Decatur animal shelter because he wouldn't hunt rabbits, and he was too wild for families to adopt.
But there's a program in Florida called J&K Canine Academy that has trained dogs to detect bedbugs for exterminators. Handlers there mostly work with beagles, and the program seeks out rescue dogs that might otherwise be euthanized.
The director of the Decatur shelter, Carol Wicks, contacted J&K and sent them a video of George displaying his energy and "nose to the ground" attitude. Besides that, he already was up-to-date on his shots and heartworm tests.
George is now being trained to sniff bugs at the program in Alachua, Fla.
