MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The U.S. Justice Department has approved new lines for congressional districts and for the state school board that were drawn by the Alabama Legislature earlier this year.

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange had submitted the plans for the approval of the Justice Department. He also submitted the plans to U.S. District Court in Washington D.C., but asked for that case to be dismissed after the Justice Department cleared the new districts.

The attorney general's office received a letter this week saying that the U.S. Attorney General does not object to Alabama's new districts.

The federal Voting Rights Act required that certain states, including Alabama, get approval for any changes in voting procedures.
