Alabama Red Cross Continues Assistance Through the Weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., March 22, 2013, 1:00 p.m. (CST) — The American Red Cross Alabama Region continues to assist residents affected by Monday’s severe weather around the state of Alabama. The damages identified and reported by both the Red Cross and other agencies is widespread and impacted a large number of rural areas across the state from the Mississippi to Georgia borders.

More than 80 Alabama Red Cross volunteers and staff are on the ground providing the following services:

Canvassing affected neighborhoods providing tarps, rakes, gloves, trash bags, clean up kits, and other items to residents who will be cleaning up and salvaging what they can over the weekend.
Using mobile feeding vehicles to feed those in the affected areas of Cullman, Etowah, and Walker Counties.
In the coming days trained Red Cross disaster workers will be meeting with the families affected and will assist them with their immediate emergency needs based on the extent of the damage to their homes.

At this time, all Red Cross shelters are on standby due to the cold temperatures and potential severe weather forecasted for the state.

Nearly 100% of Red Cross damage assessment is complete. Updated damage reports indicate the following damage assessment for residences only.

580 homes total, affected in some way
79 destroyed
140 with major damage
361 with minor to little damage
