But the building's owner says he's still trying to save it by reaching out to the local Jewish community and churches to pay for repairs.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- The Birmingham Civil Rights institute has received a $100,000 donation to help mark next year's 50th anniversary of the 1963 sit-ins, marches and boycotts. The gift came from the charitable arm of financial holding company BB&T. The money will go toward education and outreach.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The chairman of the Montgomery County school board says in a letter that she wants a state takeover of the school system amid an investigation into whether grades were altered by some administrators. Charlotte Meadows says the letter was still a draft, but it reflects her views on the issue.
