Alabama Courts Seek $8.5 Million to Avoid Layoffs

When the state government's new budget year begins on Oct. 1, Chief Justice Roy Moore says he will need assurances that the courts are going to get an extra $8.5 million in state funding or he will have to lay off 150 employees.

The Legislature wrote the new state General Fund budget so that the governor can provide the $8.5 million if tax collections exceed expectation. Gov. Robert Bentley says he has sympathy for the court system, but he doesn't see the entire $8.5 million being available.

House budget committee Chairman Steve Clouse says he's doubtful unless the state gets an unexpected windfall.

Moore says the state's economy is picking up and he remains optimistic about the extra funding for now.
