(Dothan, AL) Alabama Attornery General Luther Strange held a press conference in Montgomery on Thursday to discuss the controversy surrounding illegal gambling. Strange also spoke about Center Stage and why he ordered a raid on the business back in July.
“In Houston County, we did have a problem with them over a year ago where we sent a cease and desist letter to Center Stage,” Strange said. “In that letter, we gave them several opportunities to turn in their machines for investigation, however they simply ignored it,” he said.
Strange said he then ordered an investigation on Center Stage and found the Bingo Hall to be in violation of the law.
“Many people believe they’re operating legal charitable bingo, “ Strange said. “We are finding that these businesses are not operating on the state’s six point system, therefore they will now to go trial, and if they are legal, then we will drop this issue and move on,” he said.
Strange said he wants to resolve the issue of illegal gambling altogether be creating stiffer penalties for offenders.
Center Stage Officials said they did try to contact the attorney general’s office multiple times before being shut down. They say their machines had checked by law enforcement to ensure they were legal.
