Animal protection groups are calling for Alabama Governor Robert Bentley to sign legislation toughening the penal ties for animal cruelty.

The measure increases the penalty for animal cruelty from a maximum of 6 months in jail to one year. It also adds a definition for torturing that can cause the punishment to increase to a felony carrying up to 10-years in prison.

The director of the U.S. Humane Society says the bill gives animals more protection.
