Ala. Legislature Gets Enough for Session Start

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Icy roads and a late-night football game
didn't stop the new Alabama Legislature from beginning its
organizational session on time.

The House and Senate convened at noon Tuesday for a session to
determine the leadership for the next four years, including
committee chairmen.

The start was in doubt because of icy roads in north Alabama and
because about 15 legislators were flying back from Arizona after
seeing Auburn win the national football championship. Nearly
three-fourths of the lawmakers made it.

Legislators re-elected leaders who were chosen temporarily in a
special session in December. Rep. Mike Hubbard was elected House
speaker, Rep. Victor Gaston was chosen speaker pro tem of the
House, and Sen. Del Marsh was elected president pro tem of the
Senate.
