MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- A bill that would restore a settlement aimed at saving Alabama's financially troubled prepaid college tuition plan has been approved by a House committee.

The bill addresses issues raised by the Alabama Supreme Court when it struck down the settlement last month. It was approved by the House Ways and Means-Education Committee Tuesday on a 9-5 vote. The settlement called for the tuition plan to pay participants tuition at fall 2010 levels instead of at current levels. The Supreme Court said the settlement violated a law passed by the Legislature that said the PACT program was to be fully funded,

State Treasurer Young Boozer said the bill approved by the committee Tuesday corrects problems noted by the Supreme Court. Opponents want to insure that participants get all their money back.
