MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- The Alabama Senate has voted to honor school bus drivers on the day Dale County bus driver Charles Poland Jr. was shot and killed.

The Senate on Tuesday passed a resolution declaring Jan. 29 as Public School Bus Driver Appreciation Day. That is the day Poland was shot to death while trying to stop Jimmy Lee Dykes from boarding a bus in Midland City and abducting a student.

The resolution by Independent Sen. Harri Anne Smith of Slocomb now goes to the House for consideration. Smith says the appreciation day will be a way to honor Poland and recognize the contributions of all school bus drivers.

Poland is also honored at the state Department of Education headquarters in Montgomery.
