FAIRHOPE, Ala. (AP) -- A south Alabama sheriff's deputy is showing signs of improvement after a shooting that left another deputy dead in Baldwin County.

Sheriff's spokesman Eric Winberg says the deputy remained hospitalized Sunday at South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile.

Winberg says the officer is still in critical condition, but he's stable and is showing signs of getting better.

Officials haven't released the officer's name. He and Deputy Scott Ward were shot on Friday while answering a disturbance call near Fairhope about a man with a history of mental problems.

Ward was killed, and deputies shot and killed the man accused of shooting him, Michael Jansen.

Winberg says Ward's family has yet to complete funeral arrangements. Ward had worked for the Baldwin County Sheriff's Department for more than 15 years.
