OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) - Courtney Lockhart's jury has heard written and recorded statements in which he admits he kidnapped Auburn University freshman Lauren Burk and that his gun went off when she
tried to get out of the car.
In statements introduced Tuesday, he did not say if he intended to shoot Burk and offered no explanation as to how the gun went off. His defense attorneys contend he did not intentionally kill Burk.
The 26-year-old Lockhart is on trial in Opelika for capital murder in the killing of Burk, an 18-year-old from Marietta, Ga. Testimony introduced Tuesday included his statement that he ordered her to disrobe to make her less likely to escape. He said he never thought of having sex with her.
He has pleaded not guilty and not guilty be reason of mental defect.
