Abbeville Summer Youth Program Kicks Off

Abbeville, AL - It may be summer break, but students in Abbeville aren't just sitting at home.

Jalen Shell, 11, said, “It's not that fun at home, but here you can express yourself and have a good time.”

An eight-week summer youth program kicked off Monday at the old Abbeville High School. It was made possible by Alabama State Representative Dexter Grimsley. Many parents are grateful for this opportunity.

Abbeville Elementary Assistant Principal, Tracey Horn said, “Actually we've had parents that have come over to the elementary school almost in tears because they were looking for something for their children to be able to do over the summer. They were concerned we were not going to be able to provide anything for them. Pretty much the funding came through kind of at the last minute and we jumped right on it because we want to make sure our children get the best they can get.”

This is a very well-rounded summer program for students. They’ll spend plenty of time outside playing, time in the classroom brushing up on reading and math skills, as well as taking field trips throughout the summer.

Shell said, “I'm looking forward to field trips with my friends and just having a good time.”

“I'm out here having fun just doing anything outside. It's not really fun staying inside,” said Thomas Hardy, 12.

“It will totally develop the entire child. Not just in one particular area. They're going to learn but they're also going to have fun playing as well,” said Horn.

The program costs $80 dollars, and there are still a few spots available. But you better act fast.

You can pick up an application at the school.

If you don't live in Abbeville, you can sign up your child for one of the remaining Camp Choctaw sessions in Dothan.
