A group of 5th graders at Abbeville Elementary learned about tornadoes, hurricanes, and instruments to detect them.

The school partnered with the Tallahassee National Weather Service to give students a tour of the facility.

Through the use of a smart board and web cam, students were able to communicate directly with meteorologists and ask weather questions.

Teachers say the tour is the culmination of this week's lesson on weather.

"They love our technology because it’s so much better than paper and pencil all the time. Maybe when they look at the weather channel they'll know what they're talking about,” said Halli Pitchford, 5th Grade Teacher.

Pitchford says after participating in the tour more than half of her class want to be meteorologists.
