MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- An Alabama county has changed its policy of requiring applicants for marriage license to prove their immigration status.

The Southern Policy Law Center says the Tallapoosa Probate Office changed its guidelines for marriage license applications this week.
The law center had sued the Montgomery County Probate Office in 2011 over a similar policy and added the Tallapoosa County Probate Office as a defendant last year.

The Montgomery County Probate Office changed its police earlier this summer by explicitly prohibiting the consideration of immigration status.

The Southern Poverty Law Center asked a federal judge to dismiss the lawsuits against the two counties as a result of the policy changes.

SPLC lawyer Sam Brooke called the policy changes "a positive step forward to ensure everyone is treated fairly under the law."
