AL Gov Agencies Required To Hold Open Meetings

Government agencies in Alabama are required to hold open meetings.

Last year, the state Supreme Court ruled that doesn't apply to lawmakers.

An open meetings law is moving through the Legislature to change that.

The original law passed in 2005.

It applies to Boards of Education County Commissions and other agencies.
“Any organization, any entity that is supported by taxpayer dollars, should always be open to the press and it should always be open to the people,” said Gov. Robert Bentley.

Some aren't sure the law will have much of an impact.

They contend the open meetings law was violated last year when the School Accountability Act was passed.
