MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Alabama's attorney general is questioning the U.S. Justice Department's legal authority to get enrollment information about all students in 39 Alabama school districts.

The department is seeking the information as part of its federal lawsuit challenging the state's tough new immigration law.

Attorney General Luther Strange sent a letter to the Justice Department on Wednesday asking to be told by Friday what legal authority the department had. He said that if he hears nothing, he will presume the department had none.

A spokesman for the state Department of Education is advising school systems not to do anything, pending further information from the attorney general.
