About 50 years; that's how long the Bess family has been volunteering at Flowers Hospital.
They say it started out as a health initiative but now, it's a way of bringing the family together.
"I read somewhere that volunteering you live longer, " says Seaby Bess, who has been volunteering at Flowers the past 4 years.
One family, nearly 50 years; and they say they love every minute of their journey volunteering at Flowers Hospital.
"I went to the doctor and he said, well I did not see many people in my job and he said what you need to do is either go back to school and take a class or either start volunteering. Well my sister and my mother was volunteering here at the time and they talked about how much fun they had and how much they enjoy it and so i thought well why not? " says Bess's sister, who also volunteers at the hospital, Gerri Habbard.
"After we moved down we decided we were working too hard at home so lets go out and meet some people instead of just working working all the time, " says Seaby Bess's wife, Floy Bess.
Volunteering at the hospital is something this family says helps them keep connected. It's also a way for them to help those who need it most.
"Feeling that you are doing something to help people, I mean a hospital is the worst place and the best place," says Seaby Bess.
"A lot of times you can minister to the families, when they come by and they'll talk to you about their family members and how sick they are and so forth and sometimes you get the people that have had a terrific experience here and their patients got well and they leave, " says Habbard.
And leaving is not something this family plans on doing anytime soon.
"I enjoy being around people, I've worked with people all my working years and i enjoy just the interaction and just being able to try and figure out what people are needing to hear, " says Floy Bess.
"You're healthier because you're giving and we all know giving is better than receiving, " says Seaby Bess.
The family not only volunteers, several other family members work at Flowers Hospital.
