A Dothan recreation center is getting a major face-lift.

Today city commissioners voted to go forward with revamping the Doug Tew Center.

The facility is also known as Doug Tew Community Center.

Dothan Leisure Services Director Elston Jones says that's because it's a community hub.

The center hosts weekly meetings, birthday parties, family reunions and summer camps among other things.

A leaky roof has proven to be an issue in the past.

Commissioners approved more than a million dollars in renovations.

That includes replacing the roof along with heating, air conditioning and electrical systems throughout the building.

They will also remodel the bathrooms to make them A.D.A accessible.

Building a new facility would cost an estimated four million dollars.
