Man Dies in Confrontation with Mobile Police

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Police in Mobile say a hatchet-wielding man was shot dead and an officer was wounded as authorities tried to take the man into custody at a motel near Interstate 65.

Officials say officers were trying to arrest 24-year-old Corey Hicks on Monday when he came out of a motel room bathroom swinging a hatchet, striking a deputy in the arm.

Authorities say the officers opened fire, striking Hicks multiple times and killing him. They say one of the bullets fired by police hit the officer who had been struck by Hicks. The officer was treated at a hospital and released.

Hicks was being sought after his mother was found dead and her car missing in Pinellas Park, Fla., on Sunday.

Investigators say 51-year-old Debbie Neace died from trauma to her upper body.
